This just in: Instagram is now testing full-screen feeds!
It seems like every few weeks, Instagram changes something up. Whether it’s a shift in the algorithm or the release of new features, the app is constantly updating its functions in order to better deliver what the audience wants.
While this may be great for innovation and keeping the ever-shortening attention span of consumers, it can be pretty challenging to navigate as a creator or a small business owner using social media as part of their marketing strategy.
But don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Here’s exactly what the update includes and how you can begin to create content for Instagram’s full-screen feed.
Here’s a summary of how the new full-screen feed will function:
- When you open the app, the Instagram Feed will now operate in a full screen (9:16) mode. This is part of Instagram’s initiative to bring video more front and center.
- Vertical videos will load in full screen and photos will have auto-generated gradients to match the images. Instagram also mentioned that they’re considering adding additional options for feed post formatting, so this likely means that posting photos in a 9:16 aspect ratio will become possible in the future.
- Sound will play once an action is taken (like a tap into a story or scroll down into feed).
- Instagram will continue to recommend reels for new audiences.
- Priority will be given to original creators
Now, what does this mean for your business?
The new full-screen feed marks the end of an era. Gone are the signature square photos and graphics that we’ve come to associate Instagram with. Instead, it’s time to begin creating content in a strictly vertical orientation.
Instagram will continue to prioritize short-form video content so if you’re a small business owner or content creator who has not incorporated Reels into your Instagram strategy yet, it’s best to do so now! Additionally, the fact that Instagram is recommending reels to new audiences boasts huge potential for reach.
How can you begin creating for this new full-screen feed?
- Maximize your reach by focusing on Reels. While we can’t tell you just how much you should be incorporating this function, it’s clear that the more the better. Some videos perform better than others but it’s clear that all videos are given more reach than static photos or graphics.
- Create content in a vertical orientation. Create videos and reels with a 9:16 aspect ratio and for graphics or photos, use a 4:5 aspect ratio. It’s likely that Instagram will give the option to load photos in a 9:16 ratio in the future but for the time being, it’s not an option.
- When creating graphics and carousels, use clear indicators to signal your audience to swipe. Whether that’s adding a little arrow to tell them to swipe, or adding page numbers to each of the graphics, make it clear to your audience that you have more content to offer!
